It was made in the mid to late 1800’s probably close to 1880 to 1890's. (See below for description on where, when and how it is made).
Bohemian, Rubena and Cranberry glass: These beautiful pieces of glass have historical divided into two class, Bohemian and Cranberry glass. To that end, the two types of red glass are listed separately. This portion is dedicated to Bohemian Ruby glass, and Cranberry glass is dealt with in another section.
Bohemian glass (Bohemia crystal): Bohemia was a part of the former Czechoslovakia now a part of the Czech Republic (1993). It has long been known for its beautiful glass.
Why this section of Europe for glass creations?
The history of Bohemian glass began in its location and the abundant natural resources that were present in the countryside, limestone, silica, and chalk. It began when glass-workers discovered that potash combined with chalk resulted in a colorless glass that was more stable than Italian glass. The “Bohemian crystal” emerged to distinguish it from other glass.
The Bohemia developed into expert craftsmen that became famous for their skills in excellent work in cutting and engraving. In the second half of the 19th century, eager to expand export trade and mass-produce glass, they developed a line of vases were produced in a single color of opaque glass or in two color cased glass. One color was ruby red.
Ruby Red Glass: The Romans developed the art of ruby-colored glass, but the technique was “lost” during the Dark Ages. Johann Kunckel developed a process for making red glass through the addition of gold chloride in the late 1600’s. This ruby red glass was rich and warm appearing and combined with gold, silver-gilt or gilt metal resulted in appearance pieces that were considered luxury items. One drawback was the glass had to be re-heated in order to bring out the rich ruby color.
While the glassmakers in England, Bohemia, Italy and throughout Europe produced a limited supply of ruby red glass, the United States production did not appear until mid-19th Century. Fredich Egermann (1777-1864) perfected the use of red and yellow staining which could be brushed onto the surface of the glass. He used it to imitate the precious stone and named it Lithyalin. He was the only maker of red staining and the recipe was a secret until in a break-in its was stolen and sold to Saint Louis and then, the world.
Certain pieces are created used a red staining decoration that is very costly and demanding. After the first bowing a crystal is overlaid with another layer of colored glass mass, the major part of the colored layer is then cut off and the crystal surfaces are polished with polishing wheels by hand. A process that requires craftsmanship and patience.
Rubena Glass: Rubena is a blown glassware that shades from red to clear. It was first made by George Ducan and Sons of Pittsburgh, Penn. about 1885. This coloring was used on many types of glassware. The pressed glass patterns of Royal Ivy and Royal Oak were made by Northwood.
