A Rare find at an Estate Auction in New Hampshire, I present this pair of Antique Blue Opaline Glass Vase.
A brief History…….
Taking personal identifiers with a grain of salt when you make an estate purchase is common place. But when that identifier tells you that you have acquired a RARE beauty is – to say the least…….exciting! The following information will help identify just how special this magnificent piece is…… Opaline glass is a decorative style of glass made in France from 1800 to the 1890s, though it reached its peak of popularity during the reign of Napoleon III in the 1850s and 1860s.
The glass is opaque or slightly translucent, and can appear either white or brightly colored in shades of blue, pink, green, black, lavender and yellow. The glass has a high lead content which defined it as “demi-crystal” or semi-crystal. The primary influences on this style of glass were 16th century Venetian milk glass, and English white glass produced in 18th century Bristol.
Many different pieces were produced in Opaline glass, including vases, bowls, cups, coupes, decanters, perfume bottles, boxes, clocks and other implements. Cities involved in the production included Le Creusot, Baccarat, and Saint-Louis, Réunion, as well as various locations in England.
All Opaline glass is hand-blown and has a rough or polished pontil on the bottom. There are no seams and no machine engraving. Many pieces of Opaline glass are decorated with gilding. Some with hand painted flowers or birds. Several have bronze ormolu mounts, rims, hinges or holders. Real opaline glass was produced only in France. In the 1900’s Italy produced a similar glass and called it opaline veritable. Most all opaline glass is not branded or signed.
With this in mind, for being between 136 and 216 years old this wonderful vase can bring a bit of history to life! The lovely blue color is quite deceiving! Although is appears to be a thick deep blue, when held up to the light you are able to look from the inside out to see the hand painted gilding pattern – simply magical!!
Although the silver gilding is in less than pristine condition – it still shows the astonishingly intricate pattern laid out by the artist. The vase measures approximately 10-1/4 tall x 4-1/2” across the widest portion of the base. The top has an overall measurement of 2-3/8”, has an opening of about 1-1/4” and has an inside depth is 7”.
The vase weighs almost 3 pounds and except for a very small flake missing from one of the “petals” on the base, is in amazing antique condition! But rest assured, it in no way deters from the beauty of the piece! Other than that slight issue, there are no other cracks, chips, scratches or crazing.
