Antique EAPG Set of 6 Doyle & Co Grape and Festoon Stipple Leaf Wine Glass Pattern #25
The United States Glass Company was formed when approximately 18 glass companies combined in 1891 to try and survive trying times as a combined unit. While the idea behind the formation of this company was a sound one, the area needed to be supervised and coordinated. The numerous companies needing to be organized were located in Ohio, Indiana, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. This was too vast an area to manage well and as a result chaos often prevailed.
While other factories within the United States Glass Company were forced to close during the Great Depression of the 1930s, Factory R managed to survive. In June 1938, the offices of the United States Glass Company were transferred from Pittsburgh to Tiffin with C. W. Carlson as President. By 1940, all glassware was marked with a Tiffin label. By 1951 Tiffin was the only plant still in operation, however, the official name of the company remained the United States Glass Company through 1962.
The process of the time for making these pieces was to blow glass into a preformed mold ……so each piece has unique characteristics; air bubbles, uneven seams, slight dimensional variations, embossing imperfections and some sharp edges. However, all these personality flaws just make 116 years of glass all the more wonderful!! Early American Pressed Glass (EAPG); produced between 1850 and 1917 - glows a wonderful, bright yellow-green color when exposed to black light , so you can be sure this is true to the era.
Doyle and Company
This glass factory started in 1866 by William Doyle, Joseph Doyle, and William Beck in Pittsburgh, PA. Atterbury Glass designed for them in 1870.
They were one of the late-joiners to the U. S. Glass combine, joining about 6 months after U. S. Glass was first formed. They became Factory P.
Factory “P” was the Doyle & Co. division in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The company was located on S. 10th & Washington streets from 1891 until its demise. Doyle & Co. produced beautiful tableware pieces, including these 6 pieces of stemware….known as the Grape & Festoon Stipple Leaf #25 pattern.
At roughly 5-3/4” tall, 3-1/8” across the opening, 2-7/8” across the base and holding a full 8 ounces, these will not be pieces you will want to hide away for only special occasions. Noting that these glasses are Early American Pressed Glass (EAPG) produced between 1850 and 1917 – they have a total weight of more than 3 pounds and when exposed to black light it glows the most beautiful yellow-green color! So you can be sure this is true to the era.
Other than the expected production flaws of seams, minor rippling and/or air bubbles they are in exceptional antique condition – no flakes, chips or cracks!
These exquisite pieces would make a prized addition to any EAPG glass collection,
or be a perfect gift idea for the discerning admirer of fine quality workmanship!
